Zagorisios

Dancing culture of the region: 

This dance is performed by men and women in the whole region of Epirus and especially in the area of Zagori, where the name of the dance is derived from. Zagori is a large mountainous area in the prefecture of Ioannina (Northwestern Coast, mainland). It is comprised of approximately 46 villages, the Zagorohoria (horia = villages), which stand out for their distinct traditional nuance and style.

The music bar of Zagorisios is 5/8. The counting follows the arrangement described below.

(1) 2, 3, (4) pause (5), 6, 7 (8) pause (9) 10, 11, (12) pause (13) 14, 15 (16) pause, emphasizing the numbers (1), (5), (9), (13) and slightly less the numbers (4), (8), (12), (16).

Steps: 

Zagorisios consists of 16 steps and the music bar of 5/8 is repeated 4 times. The first music bar of 5/8 covers the steps (1) 2, 3 (4) rest.Every single bar starts with the emphasized numbers, i.e. (1) (5), (9), (13).

All 16 steps (and the rests) are isochronous to 1/8.

Handhold: a) from the hands with the elbows bent (hands up-common handhold), b) from the hands with the hands stretched (hands down).

STEP ANALYSIS

1&2) The left leg bends at the knee and crosses over the right knee; simultaneously, the right leg bounces twice.
3) The left leg steps towards the centre of the circle.
4) The right leg bends at the knee and steps on the toes behind the heel of the left foot. At this point we pause

� From 1 to 4, the torso faces to the centre of the circle.

5) The right leg steps to the right, with the toes pointing towards the direction of the circle.
6) The left leg crosses over the right and steps with the foot pointing towards the direction of the circle.
7) Same movement as in 5.
8) Same movement as in 6.

At this point we pause again.

From 5 to 8, the torso turns diagonally to the right, and the steps are performed with a slight pulse-vibration of the torso.

9&10) The right leg bends at the knee and crosses over the left knee. Simultaneously, the right leg bounces twice.
11) The right steps back and slightly to the right with the whole foot on the ground.
12) The left leg bends at the knee and crosses over the right leg, while the right foot bounces.

At this point there is a pause.

From 9 to 11, the torso faces to the centre of the circle, while in 12 it turns diagonally to the right.

13) The left leg steps opposite to the direction of the circle.
14) The right leg steps opposite to the direction of the circle, crossing, behind the left. (In 13 & 14, the torso remains turned diagonally to the right).
15) The left leg steps to the left (to a wide stance), while the torso turns to face the centre of the circle.
16) The right leg steps to the left, next to the left foot. At this point there is a final pause.
